Welcome to my Home from Home
As a denizen of the internet, let me say a big "Howdy" to you for finding your way here.
I used to be one of the part time residents of the house known as the Cyberplex, but after I followed the actual residents home enough times, (and when their lease ran out) I was brought into the fold (and out of the hallway closet where I'd been living) and moved in to the new house on Mariposa. We're still debating what to call it, but "Narcolepsy " seems to be the front runner.
Boy was that old news. It's been years since the house named Narcolepsy broke up, peacefully, and the residents went their separate ways. I lived in the house where I'd lived in a closet for a while, but I've been mostly couch surfing since March of 2001. San Luis Obispo is a really expensive place to live, when you're renting.
Meristem and CambiumWould you like to see my resume?
RootsI was born deep in the heart of Southern California, in the San Gabriel Valley. That's one valley over from the San Fernando Valley that Frank Zappa's "Valley Girl" song made so much a part of pop culture. That makes me a Valley Girl, I guess, if only by proximity. When I was four, my family escaped the smog-bound Monrovia at the base of the Pomona hills and fled to the fresher air of an even suburbier suburbia, just outside the city limits of a part of Orange County named Tustin.
I spent my school years in a parochial elementary school and at Tustin High. (The high school was notable for its mascot, the Tiller.) And when I wasn't in school, I was probably reading anything and everything I could get my hands on. It's a habit that I've kept to this day.
My dad's business card calls him a "Senior Systems Analyst", but he's always been a "computer programmer" to anyone who wasn't familiar with the computer industry. My mom runs her own business, a notary public - secretarial services company that specializes in helping immigrants wind their way through federal, state, city and county bureacuracies.
My favorite sister (well, my only sister) is a bit older than me. She used to be a punk rocker, but now she's married to a nice guy and has two adorable children, a boy and a girl.
Me? I'm a geek. A technophile, to put a more pretentious label on it. I like the whole idea of computers and love the way they've revolutionized communications around the world. Which isn't to say that I love all aspects of "the net", but as a discriminating user, I know how to get around.
TendrilsWho you think I am depends on how I touch the world that exists outside of my skin, and how I react to it touching me.
I simply adore books, of which I own far too many. They're mostly in the hard sf category, with a smattering of fantasy here and there. Sprinkle in some surprising classics, and a handful of trashy pop literature (hey, it's real brain candy), and you've got an idea of the scope of my tastes.
Films are a big source of entertainment, whether on the big screen or at home. My mother cultivated a love of "old movies" in my when I was very young. I like 'em uncensored and unadulterated. I love a film that's letterboxed. Give me the director's cut or give me bon bons! "In glorious technicolor, breathtaking cinemascope and stereophonic sound!" (Three points to you if you know what film that song was from.)
Ah. Music. Can't forget the music. I have quite a large selection of vinyl records. It started with 80's New Wave and progressed from there into rock, cheese, and classical. I had a fabulous eclectic cd collection, which was stolen, but which I'm slowly rebuilding. Favorite artists? Ummm... on any given day I'd say Peter Gabriel, but some days I find myself drifting into a Sting kind of mood.
Other things: I write, I sing, I garden (ok, I grow tomatoes. It counts as gardening, technically), I read usenet news, I watch Babylon 5 religiously, I used to hang out on IRC.
AttarMy current themesongs are, in no particular order:
Bjork's "All is Full of Love"
Sting's "Be Still My Beating Heart"
Alanis Morissette's "Hand In My Pocket"
Tears For Fears's "Sea Song"
