What's
New
at The Family
Corner?
January 2006
- Added a few links here and there. Readers might be interested in our blogs
and podcast:
February 2003
August 2002
June 2002
- Finally started tweaking around my website again.
- Began work on a new fitness
section
- Added a section about Keichu-Do Cajun
Karate. Stay tune for updates to this exciting new area of the
Family Corner!
February 2001
- Some updates, almost all cosmetic. More planned.
- Fixed some computer problems that prevented me from updating
the site.
- Deja.com discussion now defunct.
- Updated links on the FAMILY
ISSUES LINKS PAGE
June 1999
- Added yet more articles to the Online
Conversations section. (Kinda revamped that page)
- Turned our Discussion forum, which nobody seemed to use
anyway, into a Deja.com "Community". Hopefully I've fixed all the
links. Hopefully people will find their way there and post things
that are brilliant, scintillating, profound, heart-warming...or
just anything.
April 1999
March 1999
- A new section to The Family Corner...Poetry
and Prose. At this point, it's only poetry...free verse...a
bit raw... probably not everyone's cup of tea.
- Added some prose to the aforementioned Poetry
and Prose. One (Bitter
Core) is definitely *not* everyone's cup of tea. In fact, it
might not be anyone's cuppa. Be forewarned.
- Some musings on Easter added to the
Theology page.
- CRI
responds to
serious allegations from GFI
- Added a new story, about how coming to faith in Christ impacts
friendships and about how unbelievers grapple with what
Christianity really is about. Kerckhoff
Rats
February 1999
- There's been a bit of a theological shake-up in the Prewett
household and our Theological Issues
Page reflects this. The section labeled "Beyond Reformed" contains
links to articles I've found valuable. They reflect a major
paradigm shift in my understanding of the place of the Mosaic Law
in the lives of Believers today.
January 1999
November 1998
- Added what is probably the most important article ever to
appear on this website: Woman to
Woman by Helen E. Aardsma. I
wish this article had been written earlier and that I had been
able to benefit from it before my children were born.
- Changed the table of contents on our home
page.
- Added new links here and there.
- Wrote a new little article about choosing
a mountain dulcimer.
August 1998
- Added The
Family Corner Bookstore, in association with Amazon Books.
Right now, we only have a few books available, but we hope that
our selection will grow in the months to come. In the meantime,
our search engine will come in handy for finding the many books we
don't have listed.
- Added Bottlefeeding, Guilt, and
Breastfeeding Extremism, a review of Peggy Robin's
Bottlefeeding Without Guilt (retitled When Breastfeeding
is Not an Option)
July 1998
- The Christian Research Institute, a nationally recognized
Christian authority on cults and apologetics has just put out a
cover story on Growing Families International in its Christian
Research Journal. Info available here.
- Added a page on the Y2K problem
- Thanks to DejaNews, we now have The
Family Corner Discussion Forum, a place to discuss issues
related to any of the articles or resources on my site
June 1998
March/April 1998
- A somewhat major change: I decided to change the name of this
site to "The Family Corner", in order to highlight our family
emphasis and also to avoid confusion with several other sites I
discovered that are also called "Our Corner of the Web". Hopefully
"The Family Corner" isn't already out there and famous...
- Along with the name change, I've revamped the home page and
will be changing some of the other pages as time permits.
As
you can see, we also have a logo now. Cool, huh? Eventually all of
our pages will be marked with this nifty logo, if they aren't
already. We still get people confused about what is one of our
pages and what is a link and we are hoping that a more cohesive
look to our pages will help remedy this.
- I've changed the Family Issues Page a bit, so it isn't one big
long page. Hopefully it will also be easier to navigate and find
things.
- There is a new article on our Theology Page, dealing with the
issue of Frogs in Church.
- Some readers have clamored for us to return the family pictures. (Why, I
have no idea. For comic relief? So they could print mine out for their dartboards?)
I've been reluctant to do so because of the nature of some email I've received
from those who disagree with the stance I've taken on a particular issue.
Better to be safe than sorry. 'Nuff said. [Updated note: no, the pictures
were not controversial in and of themselves, unless you consider pictures
of large families to be controversial. However, due to some less than friendly
email, we've decided we'd appreciate a bit more privacy at this point.]
February 1998
December 1997
- Removed "Religious Parenting Programs: Their Relationship to Child Abuse
Prevention presented by the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Orange County
Parenting Program Review Committee" at the order of Barbara J. Oliver, Executive
Director, Child Abuse Prevention Council of Orange County. Although permission
to distribute this report was originally granted by Colleen Weeks, co-chair
of the Parenting Program Review Committee, I am now informed by Barbara Oliver
that I must "delete this information from this website immediately. You are
not authorized to publish this material and we consider further use as a copyright
infringement. We are receiving requests for this document and we will not
be fulfilling[sic] the requests."
- Replaced Lisa Marasco's article with an updated version
co-authored by Jan Barger: Examining the
Evidence for Cue Feeding of Breastfed Infants
October 1997
- Very important: Grace Community Church has released a
public statement regarding
Gary Ezzo and Growing Families International.
- Phil Johnson answers
questions about the GFI response to the GCC
Statement.
- Don't think I've done this before, but I'm actually removing
an article from my site. Yes, I can now be accused of
censorship.<g> I'm removing Jill Barrett's article,
"Spotting Legalism" for several reasons:
- Some readers felt that it made a mockery of the "weaker
brethren" who, in an attempt to safeguard themselves from sin,
do not give themselves as much liberty as others might in the
Body of Christ, or even as much liberty as Scripture would give
them. For example, such people might understand full well that
the drinking of alcoholic beverages is not forbidden by
Scripture, yet might make such a rule for themselves, knowing
their own personal weaknesses in this area. I will freely admit
that I take the Biblical admonition that "not all things are
profitable" to mean that I may, in good conscience, avoid
certain behaviors in an attempt to prevent sin--and that this
does not make me a legalist.
- I was concerned, based on comments from at least one
reader, that my inclusion of this article might be construed as
an endorsement of every opinion that Mrs. Barrett has expressed
elsewhere. While Jill and I share common ground in a number of
theological areas, that certainly cannot be said for everything
she has stated in various online forums.
- The article makes rather sarcastic reference to an incident
that I believe is long under the Blood of Jesus Christ. I would
be doing a disservice to the memory of my own dear grandfather
to be a party to such commentary on that which--as he used to
say--is "buried in the sea of God's forgetfulness, with 'No
Fishing' signs posted." (I had thought that I had long ago
deleted the paragraph in question, but had neglected to do
so.)
- Due to concerns expressed by one reader, I updated my open
letter, Avoiding Millstones, to
include a warning about the disturbing nature of the newspaper
article quoted at the beginning.
September 1997
August 1997
- Added so many links I simply didn't have the energy to put the
"new link" graphic in front of them. Look on every page!
July 1997
- Added more family pictures here and
here
- Due to controversy surrounding my unfortunate, unwise, and
seemingly hypocritical quoting of the offensive phrase "Nazi
parenting", I've altered my article "Boot
Camp for Babies" to omit that phrase. I apologize for any
offense I have caused. I should have known better.
June 1997
- Updated our FAQ
- Gave some of our articles a new look
- Created a separate page (Family Issues
Links Page) for links to other resources from our Family
Issues Page. Some of you complained that the Family Issues Page
had grown so lengthy and took way too long to load. Now the
Family Issues Page contains just the
articles on our site and links to the links page, which in turn
contains links to other online resources. Confused? Check it out.
It's really a lot less confusing than I made it sound.
- Added some new links to the Family Issues Links Page
- Added a new article: The Helpless
Parent Syndrome
- Added some links to our Health Page; didn't put the "new"
graphic by any of them...
- Updated a few things here and there
- Spent a lot of time cuddling, kissing, and enjoying our
new baby
- Discovered it's fairly easy to nurse and cuddle a baby while
tweaking web pages and uploading stuff
May 1997
- Added a link to a new
article about the Ezzos, featured in the Bradenton Herald (a
Florida newspaper)
- Far more important than anything else we did this month...we
had a new baby!!!
April 1997
- Added an important new article to the "Family Issues Page" in
the Discernment section: Wise advice for
babies? Parenting book challenges standard medical practice by
Eric Patterson, "reprinted" from the Boulder Weekly. This article
gives a careful look to the controversy surrounding the book
"Babywise" by Gary Ezzo and Robert Bucknam, MD.
- Got rid of some of our outdated and/or no longer existent
links
- Did some other stuff but don't quite remember what...
- Corrected some embarrassing typos and misspellings
February 1997 (I know, I know--all of you were beginning to
think this was a cobweb site!)
- Due to popular demand, and some new software, I'm making HTML
versions of some of our Acrobat articles available. Thus far we
have:
- Added a number of new articles to the Family Issues Page:
- "Boot Camp for Babies"
- "Mr., Mrs., Ms., Miss"--about the use of social titles by
children
- "Should Children Respect Adults?"
- "Toys and the Christian Family"
- "The Great Marshmallow Experiment"--a light-hearted and
fictional essay
- and more...more...more...
- Tweaked around some of our old articles--mostly cosmetic
changes (backgrounds, etc.)
- Updated the Theological Issues Page...finally. It has lots of
new links, so many that I didn't bother putting a "new" graphic by
them.
- Updated the Misc Page--go check it out. We have lots of new
links...news and politics...web authoring info...Mac
Goodies...search engines...some of our favorite things...and more.
Some people claim this is our "coolest" page
- I think we got rid of our text-only pages. We simply no longer
have time to update them and haven't figured out a more efficient
way to keep them current.
- Added a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) about our web
pages
September 1996
- My critique of the 3rd edition of "Preparation for Parenting"
is finally available directly on the web; you no longer have to
request this via the request form.
- Added our "NewsFlash" page to bring news and announcements of
interest to Christians...and some family news as well. (OK, so we
couldn't resist just a little self-congratulation.)
August 1996
- Finally returned "Religious Parenting Programs", the report
from the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Orange County Parenting
Program Review Committee, back online. Sorry to all of you who
couldn't retrieve it. Computer problems kept me offline. (The
report is on the Family Issues Page, in the Discernment
section.)
- Added a new article, "Our View of Children", to the Parenting
Pitfalls section of the Family Issues Page.
Sometime past mid-July 1996
- Some new links added to the Family Issues Page, in the
Discernment section:
- Gary Ezzo's response to the ABC World News Tonight
report
- a link to the text of the World Magazine article
- "Concerns About the Ezzos' Preparation for Parenting
Class"--the Reins share their experience
- Rebecca Lewis' booklet "Unto the Least of These: Godly
Parenting of the Newborn" has been scanned onto the web by the
Reins
- Added my article "Mothering in the Shadow of the Cross" to the
Parenting Pitfalls section of the Family Issues page
- Played around with some of my pages using the beta version of
Claris Home Page. So if they look weird or seem off, it's because
I didn't know what I was doing. And, if they work much better,
Claris gets all the credit.
- Added my "Home Education and the Government" article to the
Education section of the Family Issues Page. Thought about maybe
spinning off a separate page for Educational Issues, but didn't
get past the planning stage.
- Tweaked our home page a bit.
- Added "Nursing a Baby in Public: What's a Mother to Do?" to
the Family Issues Page, in the Parenting Pitfalls
section
Mid-July 1996
- An important addition: Roy Maynard, author of the World
Magazine article, "The Ezzos Know Best", responds to Gary Ezzo's
publicly circulated criticism of the article. Read this on our
"Family Issues Page", in the Discernment section.
- Added a link to the audio for the ABC World News Tonight
broadcast about the Ezzos (see our Family Issues Page, under
Discernment)
- Added a little here and there to the Family Issues Page
- Updated our text version of the "Family Issues Page", for you
poor souls with inadequate browsers. (I used to be one of you, so
I can relate. I hope to provide text versions of our other pages
sometime in the future. But then again, since hardly anyone seems
to be visiting our other pages...sniff, sniff...maybe I won't. So
there.)
- A new article: "Religious Parenting Programs: Their
Relationship to Child Abuse Prevention". This public document,
presented by the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Orange County
Parenting Program Review Committee, reviews programs from Growing
Families International as well as some other parenting programs.
Permission to distribute this report has been given by Colleen
Weeks, co-chair of the CAPCOC Parenting Program Review Committee.
The report can be found on our Family Issues Page, under
"Discernment".
Early July 1996
- Added some links to the "Misc. Resources" page
- On our Family Issues Page--"Whose Way, After All?" by Barbara
Curtis, mother of eleven!
- Put up the "Health Issues" page
- Added yet more links to the "Misc. Resources" page: Mac
Goodies and more Internet info
- Put up the rather skimpy "Theological Issues" page
End of June 1996
- On our Family Issues Page--"Growing Kids: Is It God's Way?" by
Lisa Marasco
- A slightly different look to our pages
- Added the "Misc. Resources" page--links of places we've found
interesting, fun, or helpful.
