A Saturday (2003)

Rebecca Prewett

My husband is up early---unusual for him on most Saturdays. Not only that, but he's hurrying out of the house for the men's prayer breakfast at our church. This will be a long day for him: a deacon's meeting after the breakfast, then errands, and finally a long visit with an old friend.

He's not the only one in a hurry. Although we usually don't train on Saturdays, Miriam, Benji, and I leave for the dojo (training hall) after a hasty breakfast. Today two of our students are testing, and we are probably almost as nervous as they are.

On the way, I reminisce over my yellow belt test. I sometimes wonder if I set some sort of record for being the most nervous student ever during a belt test! [For more info about our martial art, see the Keichu website.]

The belt test goes well. We are proud of our students, especially as they tie on their new stiff belts for the first time. One is now a yellow belt; the other an orange belt. We shake hands, congratulate them and take pictures.

Inspired by their performance, and eager to make good use of our time, we stay for a practice session.

After a good workout, followed by errands, we are back home. The rest of the day marches rapidly on, filled with chores, housework, lunch, more housework, and dinner. I wonder if our Saturdays are much different from families whose children are in institutional schools. Other than that we have our own schoolroom to take care of!

Finally it's time to relax...
