Footnotes for "Our View of Children"
1 Some parenting authors teach that "chastisement", "chastening" and "spanking" are synonymous. This is a misunderstanding based on an oversimplification of the terms; chastisement and chastening carry a broader meaning: correcting by punishment for the purpose of reclaiming an offender, afflicting by other means (see, for example, Psalm 69:10, "I chastened my soul with fasting"), to reduce to order or obedience; to restrain; to awe; to repress; to correct; to purify by expunging faults.
